“We do a lot of great things," said Rebecca La Pira, a mom and one of group’s organizers.

The PTO is considering a dance, a dinner and a casino night to keep its fund-raising momentum going, La Pira said. A multicultural event is also in the works.

The organization has more than 100 volunteers who have participated at events, as well as 36 committees that manage activities for children from kindergarten through the eighth grade.

“We have a very successful after-school enrichment program that utilizes out teachers," La Pira sad. "They generously give their time and form bonds.”

Her daughter was in the program and became acqainted with her teacher ahead of the school year, she said.

The group regularly collects boxtops as a way to raise funds for its programs, while also hosting service-based learning experiences. For Veterans Day, members discussed the importance of voting and they also wrote letters to local people who had served in the military.

“You come to a small town and it feels really good to be involved with the community," La Pira said. "We are a very warm, small community. It's nice to feel a part of my daughter’s school experience.”
